Chandigarh, June 16, 2026: Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and dignity of senior citizens, the Punjab Government has released ₹4.10 crore for the smooth functioning of government-supported old age homes across the state, Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur announced on Tuesday.
The minister said the financial assistance, allocated during the 2025-26 financial year, will benefit 15 old age homes being run by non-governmental organisations with government support. The funds will be used to enhance residential facilities, provide nutritious meals, strengthen healthcare services and improve other essential amenities for elderly residents.
Highlighting the government's focus on senior citizen welfare, Dr. Baljit Kaur said Punjab is working under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to ensure that elderly citizens live with dignity, security and respect.
“Senior citizens are the foundation of our families and society. Those who devoted their lives to raising families and serving society deserve care, protection and support in their later years,” she said.
The minister informed that 26 old age homes have been registered across Punjab to provide quality care, protection and a safe living environment for elderly persons in need.
Emphasising the government's zero-tolerance policy towards elder abuse, neglect and exploitation, Dr. Baljit Kaur urged citizens to report such incidents through the Elder Helpline 14567. She said complaints received through the helpline are addressed promptly to safeguard the rights and well-being of senior citizens.
The minister added that the true measure of a society's progress lies in how it treats its elderly population and reiterated the government's commitment to strengthening support systems for senior citizens across the state.
“Our senior citizens are our pride, and their happiness is the real success of our welfare initiatives,” she said.
