Chandigarh, June 17, 2026: Will the Punjab Assembly elections be held as scheduled in February 2027, or could they be affected by the proposed second phase of the Census 2027? Equally important, can the second phase of the Census be advanced to ensure that the electoral process in Punjab and other poll-bound states remains on schedule?
According to a report published by The Tribune, the Assembly elections in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur are likely to be held as per schedule during February-March 2027, with no proposal under consideration to advance the elections.
Quoting sources, the report says that the second phase of the Census, currently proposed for February 2027, ( Purposed to Start from Feb 09) may instead be advanced so that it does not overlap with the Assembly election process in these states.
The move, if implemented, would enable both the Census exercise and the electoral process to be conducted smoothly without administrative or logistical complications.
The report indicates that, as of now, there is no indication of any change in the election schedule, and the authorities are instead exploring adjustments to the Census timetable to avoid any conflict.
If the proposal is approved, voters in Punjab and the other four states are expected to go to the polls as originally scheduled, while the Census exercise would be rescheduled accordingly.
