Patiala 18 June 2026,
A public hearing organized by the National Commission for Women (NCW) in Patiala under its “NCW Aapke Dwar” initiative witnessed swift and meaningful intervention in several long-pending cases, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to ensuring timely justice for women.
During the hearing, NCW Chairperson Mrs. Vijaya Rahatkar personally heard grievances from women and their families and directed the concerned authorities to take immediate action in cases involving violence against women, harassment, and prolonged delays in investigations.
Appreciating the prompt response of the district administration and Punjab Police under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal and Senior Superintendent of Police Varun Sharma, Mrs. Rahatkar said that effective coordination between law enforcement agencies and the Commission strengthens public confidence in the justice delivery system while providing much-needed relief to victims through timely intervention.
FIR Registered in Brutal Assault Case of NRI Woman in Canada
One of the most serious cases brought before the Commission involved the parents of a young woman who was brutally assaulted by her husband in Canada in 2024, resulting in severe brain injuries. The victim continues to undergo treatment in Canada.
The family informed the Commission that although a criminal case had been registered in Canada, the accused husband had fled to India. Despite pursuing the matter with local authorities for nearly two years, they had not witnessed significant progress in the case.
Taking serious note of the complaint, Mrs. Rahatkar directed the Senior Superintendent of Police, Patiala, to ensure immediate action and registration of an FIR within 24 hours.
Acting on these directions, the police promptly registered an FIR against the accused husband and his family members under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Stronger Charges Added in Stalking and Assault Case
In another case, a young woman informed the Commission that she and her family had been violently attacked by individuals who had allegedly been stalking and harassing her. While an FIR had already been registered, the complainant alleged that appropriate legal provisions had not been invoked and that she continued to face threats and intimidation.
After hearing the matter, Mrs. Rahatkar directed the concerned police officials to immediately record the complainant’s statement and examine the applicability of relevant legal provisions. The police subsequently informed the Commission that the FIR had been updated and expanded in accordance with the complainant’s statement.
Fresh Investigative Steps in Long-Pending Missing Woman Case
The Commission also heard the petition of a mother whose married daughter has been missing since 2022. The complainant expressed suspicion regarding the possible involvement of the missing woman’s husband and one of his associates.
Observing that the case had remained unresolved for several years, Mrs. Rahatkar instructed the concerned police authorities to expedite the investigation and undertake all necessary measures without delay.
In compliance with the directions, the police informed the Commission that the husband’s Call Detail Records (CDRs) had been sought to facilitate further investigation and advance the case.
Ensuring Timely Justice Through Direct Intervention
The swift action witnessed in these cases highlights the effectiveness of the “NCW Aapke Dwar” initiative, which seeks to bring justice mechanisms closer to women and ensure that their grievances are addressed without unnecessary delay.
Mrs. Vijaya Rahatkar reiterated that every complaint reflects a woman’s faith in the justice system and must be handled with urgency, fairness, and seriousness.
She emphasized that the National Commission for Women will continue working closely with state authorities to ensure accountability, effective follow-up, and timely resolution of women-related cases.
The Commission also welcomed the cooperation extended by Punjab Police and the district administration in promptly implementing the directions issued during the public hearing.(Amrit)
