Islamabad (Pakistan), June 27, 2026: Pakistan was jolted by two consecutive earthquakes on Saturday morning, triggering panic among residents in several parts of the country. The stronger of the two tremors measured 5.5 on the Richter scale, prompting people to rush out of their homes and buildings as a precaution.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and media reports, the first earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.3, struck at around 6:15 a.m. local time. A second, more powerful tremor of 5.5 magnitude followed at approximately 8:36 a.m., less than three hours later.
The epicentre of the stronger quake was located about 63 kilometres from Barkhan in Balochistan province, at a depth of 35 kilometres (22 miles) beneath the Earth's surface.
The back-to-back tremors caused fear and prompted residents in several affected areas to evacuate homes, offices, and multi-storey buildings, gathering in open spaces until the shaking subsided.
(Despite the panic, authorities have not reported any casualties or significant damage to property so far. Officials are continuing to monitor the situation and assess the impact of the earthquakes.
