Heavy rain alert issued for Punjab and Chandigarh; Temperatures dip

Chandigarh, July 29, 2026: The monsoon has intensified across Punjab and Chandigarh, with the Meteorological Department issuing orange and yellow alerts for heavy rainfall in several districts.
Rainfall over the past 24 hours has brought down the state’s average maximum temperature by around 3 degrees Celsius. Bathinda remained the hottest city in Punjab, recording a maximum temperature of 37 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department has forecast rain and thunderstorms at several places across Punjab and Chandigarh on July 29. Light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue in most parts of the state from July 30 to August 3.
The average maximum temperature in Punjab has dropped by 3 degrees Celsius and is now 3.1 degrees below normal. The average minimum temperature has also declined by 0.5 degrees Celsius.
Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 29.6 degrees Celsius, 4.2 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 24.9 degrees Celsius, 2.2 degrees below normal.
Several parts of Punjab received significant rainfall during the past 24 hours. Sri Anandpur Sahib in Rupnagar district recorded the highest rainfall at 81.5 mm, followed by Thein Dam in Pathankot, which received 77.5 mm.
Chandigarh Airport recorded 2 mm of rainfall, while the city received 1.7 mm.
