Asstt Jail Supdt arrested in Jail mobile smuggling case
Ferozepur, July 31, 2026: In a major development in the ongoing investigation into the supply of prohibited mobile phones to inmates of Central Jail, Ferozepur, police have arrested Assistant Jail Superintendent Binny Tang, a day after arresting a jail warden in connection with the case.
Police said the role of Binny Tang surfaced during the preliminary investigation into the recovery of six mobile phones from the jail. He is likely to be produced before a court, where police will seek his remand for detailed questioning.
According to DSP City Sukhwinder Singh, six mobile phones were recovered during a search operation at Central Jail Ferozepur two days ago. A case was subsequently registered against seven inmates and jail warden Rahul (Belt No. 2939) at City Police Station.
Investigators allegedly found that the jail warden was taking money from inmates and facilitating the supply of mobile phones to them. During further investigation, evidence allegedly pointing towards the involvement of Assistant Jail Superintendent Binny Tang also emerged, leading to his arrest.
Police said questioning on remand will focus on establishing how many mobile phones had been supplied inside the jail, identifying other persons involved and determining whether money changed hands as part of the alleged racket. Police have not ruled out further arrests if additional involvement emerges during the investigation.
The repeated recovery of mobile phones has raised serious concerns over security inside the prison. The number of phones seized from Central Jail Ferozepur increased from 265 in 2021 to 437 in 2022, 469 in 2023, 500 in 2024 and a record 649 in 2025. As many as 231 mobile phones have already been recovered in 2026, indicating that the problem continues to remain a major security challenge.
The latest arrests are likely to bring greater scrutiny on the functioning of the jail security system and the alleged network facilitating the entry of prohibited communication devices into the prison.
