Sangrur (Punjab), August 1, 2026: The Punjab Congress intensified its grassroots outreach in Sangrur on Saturday under its ongoing ‘Har Booth Mazboot’ campaign, with senior party leaders calling on workers to strengthen booth-level organisation and increase direct contact with voters.
Addressing party workers, AICC general secretary and Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel said the people of Punjab were looking towards the Congress for a better and more people-friendly alternative after having experienced governments led by different political parties.
Baghel alleged that Punjab was facing a “double whammy” of the BJP-led government at the Centre and the Aam Aadmi Party government in the state. He accused the BJP of failing to address unemployment and inflation, while claiming that the AAP government had failed on several fronts, including law and order.
He also raised concerns over the alleged rise in gangster activity and extortion in Punjab, claiming that criminals were operating without fear of the law.
Calling for unity within the party, Baghel said differences were common in political organisations but should be resolved in view of the larger political battle ahead. He expressed confidence that the Congress would emerge stronger in the next Punjab Assembly elections.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said the party was in a strong position, citing its performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the Congress won seven of Punjab’s 13 parliamentary seats.
He said that despite being in power in Punjab, the AAP won only three seats, while the BJP failed to win any seat in the state.
Emphasising the importance of grassroots organisation, Warring said popularity alone could not ensure electoral success without effective booth-level management.
“No matter how popular a leader may be, elections cannot be won without strong booth management,” he said.
Referring to the electoral defeat of late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, Warring said the example demonstrated the importance of a strong booth-level network.
AICC Joint Treasurer and former Punjab minister Vijay Inder Singla said people continued to remember the work carried out by previous Congress governments and were looking towards the party to provide people-friendly governance.
Former Punjab Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, along with Congress leaders Rajinder Deepa, Durlabh Sidhu, Dalvir Goldy, Shubham Sharma and Jagdev Gaga, was also present at the programme.
