9 mobiles, Pregabalin Capsules and other prohibited material recovered from Jail
Ferozepur, August 13, 2026: In a major crackdown on the smuggling of prohibited items into the Central Jail, Ferozepur, jail authorities have recovered mobile phones, batteries, Pregabalin capsules, weapons and other banned material during searches conducted inside the prison.
According to the details recorded by the authorities, a total of 9 mobile phones were recovered along with 6 batteries and 60 pregabalin capsules. The seizures also included a kirpan, a small iron/metal object, three small knives, an adapter and an earphone.
Besides these items, approximately 90 grams of a white-coloured intoxicating powder was also recovered from inside the jail. Two additional batteries and two packets/pouches of prohibited material were also seized.
The recoveries were made during searches conducted on different dates between July 31 and August 10, 2026, from various barracks and prison premises. The record also mentions the recovery of 455 units of prohibited tobacco/zarda.
Following the recoveries, a case has been registered at Ferozepur under Sections 42(1) and 48(2) of the Prisons Act and Correctional Service 2026, against unidentified persons.
The repeated recovery of mobile phones, intoxicants, tobacco products and other prohibited articles, despite three layer security arrangements, from inside the jail highlights the continuing challenge faced by prison authorities in preventing banned material from reaching inmates.
The continuing recovery of mobile phones has raised serious security concerns for the jail authorities. On July 31, Assistant Jail Superintendent Binny Tang and a jail warder were also arrested following the recovery of mobile phones from the jail. With the latest seizures, the number of mobile phones recovered from the Central Jail, Ferozepur, in 2026 has reached 257, indicating that the problem continues to pose a major security challenge.
As a precautionary measure, mobile signal jammers have also been installed around the jail to prevent the use of mobile phones inside the premises. However, their operation has reportedly caused inconvenience to members of the public living and working around the jail campus. The latest recovery of mobile phones has also raised questions over whether the jammers are being operated effectively or continuously, though this aspect would require verification by the authorities.
