Patiala (Punjab), August 23, 2026: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s wife, Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann, on Sunday publicly rejected allegations that she had demanded Rs 5 crore to help derail a rape case, calling the charges baseless and challenging those making them to substantiate their claims.
Speaking to mediapersons after attending a Teej function in Patiala, Dr Gurpreet Kaur said she was not intimidated by the allegations and warned that those unable to prove their claims could face legal action.
“I am not scared of what allegations they level. I challenge them to prove what they have alleged or face legal action,” she said.
Dr Gurpreet Kaur was accompanied at the event by Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh and Punjab Women Commission Chairperson Raj Lalli Gill.
Allegations Follow Remarks by Former High Court Judge
The controversy erupted after former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Ranjit Singh (retd) alleged that Dr Gurpreet Kaur had demanded Rs 5 crore from an accused in a rape case, purportedly in connection with efforts to have the case settled or weakened.
Justice Ranjit Singh had also alleged that a close relative of Dr Gurpreet Kaur was in contact with the accused and had allegedly pressed him to pay the amount.
Dr Gurpreet Kaur rejected the allegations and described them as an attempt to target Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann politically.
The matter gained further attention after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took cognisance of the allegations and sought an Action Taken Report from the Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police within two weeks.
Following the NHRC’s move, the Chief Minister’s Office said that Dr Gurpreet Kaur had initiated legal proceedings by sending a legal notice to the former judge over the allegations.
