PU Students' Election: Voting ends, results expected by late evening

Chandigarh, August 31, 2026: Voting for the Punjab University student elections concluded on Monday, August 31, with the counting of votes now underway. The election results are expected to be announced by late evening, after which the winners for the presidential post and other key positions will be known.
Polling in this year’s Punjab University student elections is estimated to be around 10–15 per cent lower compared with the previous elections. A long weekend is being cited as one of the major reasons for the lower turnout.
With Friday, Saturday and Sunday being holidays, a large number of students had left for their hometowns. Several students reportedly could not return to the university in time, which is believed to have affected the overall voting percentage.
Students Seek Additional Time Amid Entry Checks
Meanwhile, some students and presidential candidates raised concerns regarding the time taken during entry checks at the university campus.
They claimed that students returning from their hometowns had to undergo security checks at the campus entrance, which took around 10–15 minutes in some cases. As a result, some students allegedly missed the opportunity to cast their votes.
The candidates and students requested the university administration to provide an additional 10–15 minutes to such students so that they could exercise their franchise. However, the administration did not agree to the demand, and the students concerned were not allowed to vote.
Counting Underway, Results Awaited
Following the completion of polling, the counting of votes has begun. The counting process started at around 12:30 pm, with students and various student organisations now waiting for the results.
The results are expected by late evening. The outcome will determine which presidential candidate emerges victorious and which student organisations secure key positions in the Punjab University student elections this year.
