Breaking: Chandigarh among Top 5 in India Electric Mobility Index 2025

Chandigarh, September 16, 2026: Chandigarh has emerged as one of the top five-performing States and Union Territories in electric mobility adoption in the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) 2025, according to the second edition of the index released by NITI Aayog in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Delhi topped the IEMI 2025, followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chandigarh and Goa among the leading performers.
The index assesses the progress of States and Union Territories in achieving their electric mobility goals and evaluates them on a scale of 100 across 16 indicators under three broad areas — transport electrification, charging infrastructure readiness, and electric vehicle research and innovation.
The IEMI is designed to provide policymakers with a comparative assessment of electric mobility progress while encouraging States and Union Territories to adopt best practices and improve implementation.
Speaking at the launch, NITI Aayog Member Rajiv Gauba said the shift towards electric mobility was an economic, environmental and strategic imperative for India's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
Gauba said electric mobility was gaining momentum in the country and estimated that 40 per cent of all new car sales could be electric by 2040. The top score achieved by a State or Union Territory also improved from 77 in 2024 to 84 in 2025, according to the index.
