Chandigarh, October 20, 2026:
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab Media In-charge Baltej Pannu strongly condemned what he described as the anti-Punjab manoeuvres of the Modi-led Central Government. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government leave no opportunity to undermine Punjab and Punjabi identity.
Pannu alleged that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was deliberately kept waiting at Delhi Airport for three hours after returning from Paris, causing him unnecessary harassment. He further alleged that a baseless challan of ₹50,000 was subsequently issued to the Chief Minister, describing the incident as a direct attack on Punjab’s dignity and identity.
Listing what he termed the Centre’s anti-Punjab policies, Pannu said that whether it was keeping farmers at Delhi’s borders for one-and-a-half years or withholding funds rightfully due to Punjab, the Central Government had repeatedly attempted to suppress the state at every level.
Pannu said that permission for foreign visits had been denied to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann at least four times so far because, he alleged, the Modi Government feared that the Chief Minister would bring investment and funds from abroad and put Punjab on the path to progress.
Pannu stated that when Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann travelled to Paris, France, in accordance with the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, he went to launch products from Punjab, including the state’s famous rajma and white chickpeas, at the world’s second-largest food festival. Even on this occasion, he alleged, the Central Government demonstrated its narrow-mindedness.Pannu did not specify what the ₹50,000 challan was issued for.
Pannu said the Hon’ble High Court had clearly directed that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann be accorded the protocol due to him. However, he alleged, the Centre’s ill intentions were evident from the fact that even the Consul General in Paris did not come to meet the Chief Minister.
Pannu said the alleged hostility and humiliation did not end there. When Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann returned from Paris and arrived at Delhi Airport, he was deliberately made to wait for three hours. According to Pannu, excuses were given that “your luggage is still arriving” and “your luggage is still being checked”. He termed these explanations outright lies and an insult to Punjab.
Pannu said that after three hours, when the Chief Minister was finally allowed to leave and his luggage was being loaded into the vehicle, officials came running after him and said that they were under “a lot of pressure from above”. A challan of ₹50,000 was then issued, he alleged.
According to Pannu, the officials themselves acknowledged that they were under pressure, which, he claimed, showed that the entire episode had taken place on the instructions of higher authorities.
Raising questions over the incident, Pannu asked whether any Chief Minister of an Indian state had ever been made to wait at an airport for three hours in this manner. Had any other state’s Chief Minister ever been humiliated by being issued a challan of ₹50,000, he asked.
He alleged that this was happening solely because Bhagwant Mann was a Punjabi, the Chief Minister of Punjab, and was working tirelessly for the state’s welfare and progress.
In a sharp attack on the Modi Government, Pannu said the Centre was afraid of Punjab’s progress. He alleged that the Central Government did not want Punjab to advance in any field or have a Chief Minister who worked for the welfare of its people.
Pannu said the Centre was creating obstacles and putting up barriers at every turn. However, he asserted, “No one can suppress the conscience of Punjab.”
