Chandigarh, October 23, 2026: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Friday unanimously passed a resolution opposing alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and called for an independent investigation into complaints of eligible voters being deleted from voter lists.
The resolution was passed during a special session of the Assembly under the leadership of Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan. It urged the Central Government and the relevant constitutional authorities to ensure transparency in the electoral process.
Speaking on the resolution, Sandhwan referred to Articles 324, 325 and 326 of the Constitution, which deal with the Election Commission’s role in conducting elections, non-discrimination in electoral rolls and adult suffrage.
The Speaker expressed concern over complaints from different parts of the country alleging that eligible voters had been unlawfully removed from electoral rolls. He said such complaints raised questions about the transparency, impartiality and accountability of the Election Commission of India.
The resolution called for an independent, impartial and credible investigation into decisions concerning electoral rolls and objections raised in this regard, with the stated aim of restoring public confidence in democratic institutions.
It also expressed concern over the functioning of the Election Commission under the Chief Election Commissioner and sought greater accountability in the electoral roll revision process.
