Madrid (Spain), October 28, 2026: At least 30 people were killed after two high-speed trains collided in Spain on Wednesday, triggering a major emergency response and raising concerns over another deadly rail disaster on the route connecting Madrid with the southern region of Andalusia.
Regional authorities confirmed the rising death toll as rescue teams worked at the crash site. Television footage from Castilla-La Mancha showed a derailed train with several carriages still on an elevated section of track, while twisted metal, broken panels and wreckage lay scattered down the embankment.
The accident involved trains operated by Spanish rail companies Iryo and Renfe, according to information provided to Reuters by a person briefed on the incident. The source said an Iryo express train had stopped near Toledo following a signal fault, reportedly on instructions from rail infrastructure manager ADIF, when a Renfe train struck it at high speed.
