Kurukshetra (Haryana), November 1, 2026: President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday graced the diamond jubilee celebrations marking 60 years of Haryana’s formation at Kurukshetra University, with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini welcoming her presence as a moment of pride for the state.
Addressing the gathering, Saini said Haryana had made remarkable progress since its formation on November 1, 1966, and was now working towards becoming India’s first developed state while contributing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat-2047.
Haryana Governor Professor Ashim Kumar Ghosh also attended the celebrations.
Describing President Murmu’s journey from Uparbeda village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district to the country’s highest constitutional office, the Chief Minister said it reflected the strength of Indian democracy and the dignity of the Constitution.
He said her journey served as an inspiration for the country’s daughters, economically weaker sections and tribal communities, demonstrating that determination and opportunity could help people overcome barriers.
Saini also highlighted Kurukshetra’s spiritual and historical significance, recalling that the Bhagavad Gita’s message of duty, courage and public welfare was delivered on this sacred land.
Referring to President Murmu’s participation in the International Gita Mahotsav in 2022, he said she had described the Bhagavad Gita as a spiritual light for humanity and a source of guidance in life.
Haryana’s Daughters Making Their Mark Across Fields
Highlighting the contribution of women to Haryana’s development, Saini said the state’s daughters were bringing laurels in diverse fields, including agriculture, sports, the armed forces and startups.
He said Haryana’s identity had been shaped by its hardworking farmers, courageous soldiers, accomplished sportspersons and empowered women.
Paying tribute to farmers for their contribution to the country’s foodgrain reserves, he also acknowledged the achievements of livestock farmers in milk production. He recalled the popular saying, “Desan mein des Haryana, jit doodh-dahi ka khana,” reflecting the state’s agricultural and dairy heritage.
The Chief Minister also highlighted Haryana’s sporting achievements, stating that its athletes had won 11 medals at the Commonwealth Games and 32 at the Asian Games.
Haryana Contributes 3.6% to India’s GDP
Highlighting the state’s economic performance, Saini said Haryana had made a contribution to the national economy far exceeding its geographical size.
With just 1.34 per cent of India’s geographical area, Haryana contributes nearly 3.6 per cent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and has the highest per capita income among major states, he said.
He further said Haryana manufactured two out of every three passenger cars, every second tractor and six out of every 10 motorcycles produced in the country. The state also accounted for more than 60 per cent of India’s basmati rice exports.
Haryana’s Development Initiatives
The Chief Minister highlighted several initiatives in agriculture, governance and infrastructure, saying Haryana had become the first state in the country to procure all crops at Minimum Support Prices (MSP).
He also referred to initiatives aimed at freeing villages from Lal Dora restrictions and introducing educational qualifications for panchayat representatives.
On infrastructure development, Saini said India’s first hydrogen train had operated between Jind and Sonipat, while Haryana had also developed elevated railway tracks in Rohtak and Kurukshetra.
He said the achievements of the past six decades had been made possible through the collective efforts of farmers, workers, industrialists, traders, soldiers, sportspersons and women.
Saini said the state’s future development would remain anchored in compassion, social harmony, brotherhood and respect for its cultural values and traditions.
