Ferozepur Police cracks down on stubble burning viasatellite alerts; district records 188 farm fires
Ferozepur, November 3, 2026: Ferozepur district police registered 22 FIRs at six police stations in a single day, naming 30 persons for allegedly burning paddy residue. Nine unidentified persons were also booked in separate cases.
The FIRs were lodged at Lakho Ke Behram, Guruharsahai, Zira Sadar, Mallanwala, Mamdot and Sadar Ferozepur police stations. In one of the latest cases, Amarjit Singh of Village Gatti Mattar was booked at Lakho Ke Behram police station on a tip-off.
The district has so far recorded 188 stubble-burning incidents this year, against 201 on the same date last year. The marginal decline comes even though around 80 per cent of paddy harvesting has already been completed.
Action is being taken on the basis of information from field-level officials and the satellite monitoring centre of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB). Whenever a farm fire is detected, either through satellite monitoring or field reports, the information is passed on to the concerned police station, which conducts an inquiry before initiating legal action against those found responsible.
Deputy Commissioner Deepashikha Sharma said the administration is placing equal emphasis on enforcement and awareness to discourage farmers from burning crop residue.
As part of the awareness drive, 165 village-level camps and three block-level camps have been organised across the district. Seven special activities were also held to involve school students in spreading awareness about the harmful effects of stubble burning. In addition, around 1.85 lakh pamphlets have been distributed among farmers and residents.
