"In.............ko fit kar do."-Misuse of Haryana Police during Asian Games. Extracts from my upcoming Book ' Untold story of Haryana Police."
Police is an instrument to settle scores with opponents.Here we deal with how it was misused during the Asian Games.Above was brief to Police regarding tackling the Akalis threat to disturb the Asian Games in 1982.
Haryana Police shot into prominence during this period by preventing even ordinary Sikhs from reaching Delhi via Haryana on the pretext of preventing Akalis who had threatened to disturb the games.
Then Haryana CM, Bhajan Lal wanted to win over the confidence of then PM, Indira Gandhi who was worried over the threat of the Akalis disturbing the Asian games as this would bring bad name to the country abroad.
Bhajan Lal had publicly claimed that Indira Gandhi was on verge of yielding to the threat of Akalis and it was he who had fortified her mind against the Akalis demands.
Addressing a public meeting in Jind district,Bhajan Lal had said that he had told Madam that accepting the demands at that juncture would give wrong signals to the Akalis.
Bhajan Lal had further boasted that he had assured that he will not allow even a single Sikh to reach Delhi via Haryana and this according to Bhajan lal had changed the mind of Madam.
Bhajan lal had assured her " Agar Ek bhi Akali Haryana se hokar Delhi chala gaya to mujhe pankhe se bandh kar phansi par latka dena .( Even if a signle Akali reaches Delhi via Haryana,you hang me tying with the fan ).Bhajan lal,s speech was published in detail in Indian Express of December,2,1982 under the heading " Bhajan made PM,change her mind under the byline of the author who was reporting for the paper from Jind.
Haryana Police had made arrangements to stop the movement of Akalis across the State border to Delhi.All the trains and buses passing through Haryana to Delhi were thoroughly checked and every suspicious-looking person was made to stop down and the arrangements were strict to the point of harassing to the innocent Sikhs.
The rough Haryanvi cops with tacit green signals from the political and senior bosses drew sadistic pleasure in stopping cars of even the senior officers or big businessmen going to Delhi,on domestic or business purpose ,checking their belongings,making inflammatory remarks and showing disrespect to their families travelling with them which prompted veteran Journalist Khushwant Singh to remark that to Bhajan,s mind,every person wearing a turban was either an Akali or an extremist.
The heavy arrangements in some cases proved to be a boon for the corrupt cops who on prerext of checking looted the innocent passengers.
NOTE. Book will deal every aspect of Haryana Police since Haryana became a seperate State as during my forty five years stint as a Journalist I came to know several intrigues of senior cops and their nexus with politicians and even criminals.The purpose of the book is not to defame the Haryana Police which despite some aberrations at top is by and large a very good and higly professional force,having IPS,officers and Juniors known for their integrity ,honesty and devotion to the duty, even at the cost of persecution at the hands of the powers that be.I being born Haryanvi feel deeply concerned about the state of affairs of the Police.Readers and specially the Cops are requested to share their experiences.
