Traffic problems in Ludhiana......by Rishika Kriti
Ludhiana is infamous for its traffic jams where daily commutation has become a bad dream for netizens. Behind this problem, there are several reasons which are contributing to this issue.
Poor quality roads
Even after being the industrial hub of the state, the city is suffering from poorly maintained roads. The potholes on stretches like Gill Road, Dana Mandi Road, Sherpur Road etc remain unattended, adding to the misery of commuters.
Many times, concerns have been raised by the locals to repair these roads but the problem remained unresolved so far.
Delay in ongoing road projects
Under the 'Smart City Mission', the city was gifted with numerous road projects to reduce the burden of traffic on roads. But instead, these projects have led to the worsening of the situation owing to various delays.
Projects like the construction of elevated road, the Rail over Bridge project on Pakhowal road, repairing of focal point roads are falling behind their given deadline, adding to the agony of residents who are facing the inconvenience on a daily basis.
Hence, taking consideration of problems faced by netizens, Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjeev Arora reviewed these ongoing road projects. In the beginning of this month, he chaired a joint meeting with district administration and concerned departments to assure the completion of these projects in the allotted time.
While addressing the meeting, he said," I want execution of all development works speedily". He also instructed that the works should strictly be done as per quality control norms.
Huge number of vehicles
Ludhiana owns the highest number of vehicles in the state. In 2013, it has registered over 12.2 lakhs vehicles running on roads.
As a result, these numbers have congested the roads worsening the traffic issues in the city. At present, there is a dire need to expand the existing road network of the city to avoid bottleneck traffic
Lack of Parking Spots
Ludhiana is the most populated city of Punjab. In fact, the city is so crowded that there are barely any space left for people to park their vehicles.People visiting areas like Feroze Gandhi Market, Ghumar Mandi and Clock Tower have to face lots of inconvenience due to lack of parking spots.
As a result, they are left with no option but to park their vehicles on bustling roads which lead to clogged entry or exit points and disorganised traffic. Paying a visit to these locations have become a nightmare for residents.
Ludhiana is facing the problem of traffic for a long time now. Hence, authority needs to pay requisite attention on it so that the roads of the industrial hub of Punjab can function smoothly.
