Cleaner Air, Healthier Lives: Simple steps to fight pollution and boost well-being......by Dr. Vivek Bindra
New Delhi: Air pollution is a major concern in today's world, and it contributes significantly to the worsening conditions of our country, causing a serious threat to both the environment and public health.
There are many cities around the world that have been facing this issue but Delhi has left all the cities behind and is ranked in the Top 5 most polluted cities in the world with 6M-7M morning visibility. However, in Anand Vihar, Delhi, it broke all the records of PM 2.5 as it reached 999 in November.
As pollution levels rise, it brings about severe health issues such as respiratory problems, lung cancer, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, and more. But who is to blame for this air pollution? We humans are the reason for this pollution in the city by establishing industries, etc.
While we are well aware of these problems, let's focus on solutions to improve our health from air pollution.
Less Paper, Less Pollution:
Every year, around 8 million trees are cut down, and about 17-25 trees are cut to make a single A4-sized sheet of paper. Reducing the use of paper by 80% in our daily lives can not only help reduce pollution but also bring benefits like digitalization, data retention, and increased profitability in businesses.
Less Food Wastage, Less Pollution:
Around 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted every year, and the landfill dumping of food waste produces methane gas, which is more than 25% more dangerous than carbon dioxide. One kilogram of food waste produces four kilograms of methane gas, which is harmful to our health. Reducing food waste can save a lot of money and improve our health.
More LED Bulbs, Less Pollution:
Electricity is either produced by burning fossil fuels or coal, which results in pollution. However, using energy-efficient LED bulbs can reduce electricity usage by 80% compared to normal bulbs and provide 25% more time duration. This can increase profitability and reduce pollution.
Less Water Wastage, Less Pollution:
As there is only 1% of drinking water on earth, extracting water from the ground affects the growth of trees and farming, and the scarcity of trees leads to no rain. Saving water by closing unnecessary taps can increase the growth of trees and ensure the availability of water.
More EV Vehicles, Less Pollution:
Transportation contributes to 30% of greenhouse gases affecting the natural environment. Delhi has around 79.81 lakh motor vehicles on the roads, which increases pollution. Carpooling, shuttle cars, and auto EVs are effective solutions to reduce pollution in the city.
In conclusion, air pollution is a serious issue that affects both the environment and public health. It is our responsibility to take steps towards reducing air pollution and improving the air quality of our surroundings.
By implementing simple measures like reducing paper usage, minimizing food waste, using energy-efficient LED bulbs, saving water, and adopting electric vehicles, we can significantly reduce air pollution and make our cities cleaner and healthier places to live in. Let's take action now to ensure a sustainable future for ourselves and future generations.
