Amritsar (Punjab), February 28, 2026: In a significant step toward promoting fitness and steering youth away from drugs, noted orthopaedic surgeon and philanthropist Dr Avtar Singh inaugurated a state-of-the-art gym in Bohru village of Amritsar district on Friday.
The initiative, launched in collaboration with Gram Panchayat Bohru and Sarpanch Captain Sardar Daljit Singh, aims to provide rural youth with a safe and accessible space for physical training and sports activities, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and positive engagement.
Dr Singh, Chairman of Udaan Trust and Director at Amandeep Hospital, said the project aligns with his long-standing mission to combat the drug menace through sports and community empowerment.
“Our goal is to empower rural youth to lead healthy and productive lives. With the support of the village leadership, we have created a space where young people can channel their energy into constructive pursuits and stay away from substance abuse,” he said.
With over three decades of medical and social service, Dr Singh has led several impactful initiatives. Through the Amandeep HOPE project, free healthcare was extended to over 54,000 patients across 852 villages. He has also supported underprivileged children through free cleft lip and palate surgeries under the Smile Train Project.
His efforts further include distributing sports kits in more than 33 villages, promoting anti-drug awareness campaigns through graffiti, and supporting budding athletes via Amandeep Cricket Academy and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Hockey Academy. He has also provided free OPD services at Durgiana Mandir, healthcare through Jai Ho Mohalla Clinic, and affordable treatment initiatives such as Aman Ki Asha.
Dr Singh’s motto, “Naujawano Kheedan Na Judo Te Nashiaya To Mudo” (Youth, engage in sports and turn away from drugs), continues to inspire rural communities to prioritise fitness, discipline and well-being.
The newly inaugurated gym at Bohru village stands as another milestone in his ongoing crusade to build healthier, drug-free communities across Punjab.
