National Sports Day: Surjit Hockey Society to distribute Sports kits to 100 young players in Jalandhar

Jalandhar (Punjab), August 25, 2026: The Surjit Hockey Society will organise a special event on August 29 to mark National Sports Day and the birth anniversary of legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, with sports kits to be distributed among 100 emerging hockey players.
The event will be held at 6:30 am at the Astroturf Practice Ground of Surjit Hockey Stadium in Burlton Park, Jalandhar.
Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner and President of the Surjit Hockey Society, Varjeet Singh Walia, IAS, will attend the event as the chief guest.
Giving details, Surjit Hockey Society CEO Iqbal Singh Sandhu, PCS (Retd), said the sports kits would be distributed to 100 young players associated with the Surjit Hockey Academy run by the society.
The initiative aims to encourage young people to take up sports, identify and support talent at the grassroots level and provide aspiring hockey players with resources to develop their skills.
National Sports Day is observed across India every year on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, regarded as one of the country’s greatest hockey players. Dhyan Chand represented India at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games, winning gold medals at all three editions.
Sandhu said the initiative reflects the society’s efforts to strengthen grassroots hockey and create greater opportunities for young players to pursue the sport.
The sports kits are being provided by the Punjab Government’s Sports Department and the Surjit Hockey Society in collaboration with Dr BS Johal, Managing Director of Johal Super Specialty Hospital, Jalandhar.
