Amritsar (Punjab), April 6, 2025: In a significant and emotional development, organizers of the much-anticipated Amritsar Pride Parade 2025 have announced the cancellation of the event, originally scheduled for April 27 at Rose Garden, Amritsar. The decision comes in the wake of strong opposition from certain religious groups, notably some Sikh organizations.
In a joint statement, organizers Ridham Chadha and Ramit Seth expressed deep disappointment over the decision but emphasized that the safety and well-being of the LGBTQIA+ community members and supporters remain their top priority.
“We’ve been organizing peaceful Pride events in Amritsar since 2019 to celebrate love, equality, and the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, especially focusing on transgender representation. However, this year, the opposition has created an unsafe environment, forcing us to make this painful decision,” said the organizers.

The cancellation follows public resistance by some religious leaders, including Nihang Singh Paramjit Singh Akali, who called on the local administration to deny permission for the parade. He warned that such events would not be allowed in the holy city under any circumstances, citing religious sentiment.
Despite the setback, the organizers reiterated that their intention was never to hurt anyone’s religious or cultural beliefs. Their core objective, they stated, was to create space and awareness for marginalized communities, especially trans individuals who continue to face social and economic exclusion.
“In past years, the Pride Parade not only received overwhelming support but also helped many individuals find guidance, employment, and a sense of belonging. This year, we hoped to continue that legacy,” the statement added.
While the cancellation has disappointed many community members and allies, human rights activists have raised concerns over the growing intolerance towards peaceful expression and inclusivity.
Several voices on social media have called for dialogue over division, emphasizing that freedom of expression and safety for all communities must coexist.
The organizers concluded by reaffirming their commitment to the cause, saying that this cancellation is not the end, but a pause. They promised to return stronger, with continued efforts toward building a more inclusive and compassionate Punjab.
