Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), December 22, 2025: A video allegedly showing doctors assaulting a patient inside the respiratory department of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage and demands for strict action against the accused medical staff. The Himachal Pradesh government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
According to preliminary information, the patient, identified as Arjun, a resident of Kupvi in Shimla district who reportedly teaches at a private academy, had visited IGMC for an endoscopy. His family has alleged that a verbal argument broke out between the patient and a doctor, which soon escalated into physical violence.
The viral video purportedly shows a doctor punching the patient in the face, while another doctor is seen holding his leg. The assault allegedly resulted in the patient’s nose bleeding. Family members claim that the patient was asked to rest on an empty bed before the procedure, when a masked doctor approached and began misbehaving. Despite explanations from the attendants, the doctor allegedly lost his temper and assaulted the patient. It is also claimed that the patient tried to defend himself during the altercation.
Following the incident, the patient’s family staged a protest within the hospital premises, raising slogans against the doctors and the hospital administration, and demanding the immediate dismissal of the accused. The situation escalated, prompting police intervention. The patient and his family were later taken to the police station for further proceedings.
IGMC hospital authorities have confirmed that an internal inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the facts and fix responsibility. Officials stated that the investigation would determine the extent of culpability of those involved.
