Nawanshahr (Punjab), October 21, 2026: A free Bone Mineral Density (BMD) screening camp was organised at District Hospital, Nawanshahr, under the guidance of Civil Surgeon Dr. Aman Sood and the leadership of Senior Medical Officer Dr. Ajay Kumar Basra. A total of 123 patients underwent free bone density screening.
Dr. Basra said osteoporosis weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures, often without noticeable early symptoms. He emphasised that timely screening helps detect bone weakness and facilitates appropriate treatment.
People above 50, particularly postmenopausal women, are at higher risk. Calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, physical inactivity, tobacco and alcohol consumption, and a family history of fractures are other risk factors.
He advised people to consume a balanced diet rich in calcium, get adequate sunlight, exercise regularly and avoid tobacco and alcohol. He also stressed the importance of fall-prevention measures for older adults and recommended consulting a doctor about bone density testing.
Dr. Basra appealed to residents to prioritise bone health and seek medical advice when needed.
