Amritsar (Punjab), July 23, 2025 — Under the visionary leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has marked a significant milestone in academic research by establishing the 'Chair on Sikh Studies' through a historic agreement with Jaspreet Singh, a prominent attorney and social worker from Sacramento, California.
The university has officially set up the chair, with Dr. Amarjeet Singh, former Director of the Centre on Studies in Sri Guru Granth Sahib of the University, appointed as its head.
The appointment ceremony was attended by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar Prof. K.S. Chahal, OSD S. Hariqbal Singh, and S. Parminder Singh.
Addressing the occasion, Prof. Karamjeet Singh outlined the chair’s development plans and future objectives, stating that progress would be reviewed every three months to ensure the fulfillment of the goals envisioned by Jaspreet Singh.
He emphasized that the chair would focus on addressing contemporary challenges faced by Sikhism from theological and historical perspectives, alongside re-evaluating Sikh resources.
Special attention will be given to connecting the younger generation with Sikhism’s rich religious heritage.
The chair aims to publish high-quality research books in accessible language and modern idioms, catering to diverse age groups and intellectual levels.
Additionally, a special lecture series will be launched, featuring distinguished Sikh scholars to discuss pressing Sikh issues.
Notably, the agreement for establishing the chair was signed at US in early June under Prof. Karamjeet Singh’s leadership, with the chair being successfully set up by mid-July, reflecting the university’s efficient execution of the initiative.
