Health Dept Observes World Glaucoma Week; urges caution for high-risk patients
Ferozepur, March 10, 2025: ‘World Glaucoma Week’ to raise awareness about the rising cases of glaucoma (kala motia) and its prevention was launched by the health department, under the tutelage of Dr Rajwinder Kaur, Civil Surgeon.
Addressing patients and their families at the hospital, ophthalmologist Dr. Ranjit Singh highlighted key symptoms of glaucoma, including persistent headaches, eye pain, frequent changes in prescription glasses, seeing coloured halos around lights, redness, and sudden vision loss. He stressed the importance of early detection to prevent permanent blindness.
Speaking on the occasion, Ophthalmic Officer Ashu Sharma warned that individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, allergies, asthma, or skin conditions—especially those using steroids—are at a higher risk of developing glaucoma.
District Mass Media Officer Sanjeev Sharma and Dy MMO Ankush Bhandari emphasized that glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in India. They urged individuals experiencing any symptoms to get their eye pressure checked immediately.
The Punjab Health Department has announced free glaucoma screening camps at all district hospitals, sub-divisional hospitals, and government medical colleges across the state until March 15. Those experiencing potential symptoms are encouraged to take advantage of these free check-ups.
