Mandi, June 30, 2025:
A landslide at the entrance of the Thalout Tunnel on the Mandi-Kullu National Highway has caused significant disruption, blocking the road and stranding hundreds of vehicles in a massive traffic jam inside the tunnel. The incident, reported on June 30, 2025, around 12 pm is part of widespread monsoon-related chaos in Himachal Pradesh, where heavy rainfall has triggered multiple landslides and road blockages across Mandi, Kullu, and other districts.
Local authorities, including police and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), are working to clear the debris and restore traffic flow. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts, including Mandi and Kullu, with warnings of potential flash floods and further landslides until July 5, 2025. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported that 129 roads were blocked across Himachal Pradesh on June 29, with Mandi alone accounting for 44 closures.
Commuters are advised to avoid the Mandi-Kullu route and stay updated on road conditions. The state has already suffered significant losses, with 20 monsoon-related deaths and damages worth over ₹75.4 crore reported since June 20, 2025. Authorities urge residents and tourists to stay cautious, avoid riverbanks, and follow safety advisories as the region braces for continued heavy rainfall.
