Chandigarh, July 2, 2025: A major concern has emerged as water has begun leaking from the Bhakra Canal, triggering fears of flooding in nearby villages of Punjab.
According to preliminary reports, the leak appears to be developing beneath a bridge, raising alarms due to the high water pressure and swift current in the canal.
The situation is being closely monitored as the Bhakra Canal, which originates in Himachal Pradesh and flows through Punjab, Haryana, and into Rajasthan, is a critical lifeline for irrigation and water supply across northern and even southern India.
Simultaneously, water levels in the Ghaggar River are rising steadily due to persistent rainfall, compounding flood risks in low-lying areas.
Officials fear that if the leakage worsens, it could lead to a serious breach, causing damage to infrastructure and displacing nearby residents.Emergency response teams are being alerted, and efforts are reportedly underway to assess and contain the leak.Authorities have urged residents of vulnerable villages to stay alert and follow safety advisories.
