Manohar Lal opens 18th Urban Mobility India in Gurugram; RRTS-style systems planned for more cities
Gurugram, November 7, 2025: Union Housing & Urban Affairs and Power Minister Manohar Lal on Friday inaugurated the 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference & Exhibition 2025 in Gurugram, launching a three-day forum on the theme “Urban Development and Mobility Nexus.”
The event, jointly organised by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the Government of Haryana through the Institute of Urban Transport (India) and Gurugram Metro Rail Limited, has drawn more than 1,600 participants, including metro MDs, state transport heads, researchers and international experts.
In his address, the Minister said India’s 1,100-km operational metro network is the world’s third largest and is poised to become the second, adding that last‑mile connectivity will be a key focus to lift ridership. He announced that 10,000 electric buses will be deployed under PM e‑Bus Sewa in smaller cities, with 100 e‑buses earmarked for Gurugram.
He also said Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, through its subsidiaries, will serve as MoHUA’s nodal arm for consultancy, construction, turnkey projects, O&M services in India and abroad, and for planning, coordination and management support to Mass Rapid Transit Systems nationwide. Transport systems on the lines of the RRTS will be taken to other major cities, he added.
Minister of State Tokhan Sahu underlined mobility’s role as a driver of socio‑economic growth, highlighting Transit Oriented Development and the National Common Mobility Card as key enablers. MoHUA Secretary Srinivas Katikithala stressed integrated planning to improve liveability and sustainability in Indian cities.
Across plenaries, panels and technical tracks, the conference will examine innovations and policy frameworks for inclusive, future‑ready urban mobility. On the sidelines, the Minister inaugurated the exhibition and rode a retrofitted electric auto converted from CNG, showcasing India’s push toward cleaner, more accessible transport.
