Punjab braces for heavy rain; IMD warns of severe weather in three districts
Heavy rain warning issued for parts of Punjab, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur; several states face flood and landslide-related disruptions

New Delhi, August 2, 2026: Monsoon activity remained intense across several parts of the country on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds in multiple states over the coming days.
The weather system is expected to remain active until August 7 due to the influence of a low-pressure area, prevailing monsoon conditions and a western disturbance affecting parts of the Himalayan region. Heavy rainfall and strong winds are likely in several areas, while isolated locations may experience gusty winds.
Rainfall has been forecast in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand. The IMD has also issued heavy rainfall alerts for several other parts of the country.
In Punjab, heavy rain is likely at isolated places, including parts of Pathankot, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur. Monsoon activity is also expected to continue in Haryana, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh during the next few days.
Several parts of Uttarakhand are likely to remain vulnerable to heavy rainfall and rain-related disruptions. Districts such as Dehradun, Nainital and Pithoragarh may experience continued wet weather, raising concerns over landslides and disruption to road connectivity.
The ongoing monsoon spell has already caused widespread damage in several states. In Kerala, heavy rainfall has triggered flooding and landslides, resulting in deaths and the displacement of residents from affected areas. Authorities have undertaken evacuation and relief measures in vulnerable locations.
In Karnataka, members of a family were reported killed in a landslide in Shivamogga district, while rain-related incidents have also affected several other parts of the state.
In Jammu and Kashmir, a cloudburst-related flood in Kishtwar caused extensive damage. Schools in Kishtwar, Doda and Ramban districts were closed as a precautionary measure following the incident.
Meanwhile, landslides and debris on major highways in Uttarakhand disrupted traffic on the Yamunotri and Badrinath routes, affecting travel in the hill state.
With heavy rainfall expected to continue in several regions, authorities have advised people living in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas to remain alert and follow weather-related advisories. Travellers have also been urged to check local weather and road conditions before undertaking journeys, particularly in mountainous regions.
