GNDU without VC first time in 55 years: Cause of concern
Amritsar, November 21, 2024:
Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Amritsar counted as one of the reputed varsities of the country is at the moment without the services of a VC, which is quite unfortunate. Moreover, it reflects poorly on the policy of the current government towards education and is bound to raise uncomfortable questions in future. Releasing a press note today, Rajneesh Bhardwaj, president GNDUNTEA urged strongly to the government to appoint the VC at the earliest.
It is pertinent to mention here that the term of the VC Prof Jaspal Singh Sandhu expired on Nov 16, 2024. PROF Sandhu had taken over as VC of the university in 2017, and the university had scaled newer heights in academics thanks to his visionary, dynamic approach. In comparison with the other varsities of the state the gndu under the able tutelage of prof sandhu had done exceptionally well in NAAC ranking during his tenure, apart from great achievements in the field of research and sports. Prof Sandhu, who had also served as Secretary, UGC before joining the gndu as VC, always managed to obtain sufficient funds for the university with his clout. Consequently, this university never had any financial crisis like few other varsities, all the employees including pensioner have been getting their emoluments well in time.
The ever increasing enrollment of students in the university is not less than an achievement, whereas it is a major cause of concern in some varsities.expressing his deep concern at the absence of a VC, Rajneesh Bhardwaj added that on the one hand exam have already commenced in the uni and in the affliated colleges, on the other the uni is celebrating it's foundation day on Nov 24, 2024. And it will be for the first time in it's history that the foundation day will have to celebrated without the head of the uni family. He appealed to the government of Punjab to grant an extension to prof Jaspal Singh Sandhu, so that the university may march ahead in the times to come as well.
