Chandigarh, March 20, 2025:
In a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug financing, the Punjab Police, under the leadership of DGP Gaurav Yadav, has successfully dismantled a major drug and hawala syndicate operating in the region. The operation, conducted by the Tarn Taran Police, led to the arrest of five individuals, and the seizure of illegal weapons, narcotics, and a large sum of cash.
The operation turned tense when the accused opened fire on the police party, prompting a swift and necessary response. In the ensuing exchange, two of the accused sustained injuries to their legs, and were promptly provided with medical care.
A critical development in the investigation was the arrest of Iqbal Singh, a key facilitator of hawala transactions linked to Dubai-based drug cartels. Singh confessed to facilitating the transfer of ₹50 crore over the past three months to fund cross-border drug smuggling activities.
The police have registered an FIR under the NDPS Act, Arms Act, and BNS Act. The operation led to the recovery of:
- 7 kg of opium
- 3 pistols (30 bore) with 6 magazines
- ₹23.10 lakh in drug money
- A currency counting machine, among other items
Punjab Police continues to take aggressive and systematic steps to dismantle the drug ecosystem in the state and remains unwavering in its commitment to eradicate organized crime.
