Chandigarh, February 9, 2026:Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia on Sunday made a strong pitch for Akali unity, stating that efforts to bring together the fragmented factions of the party have already begun.
Speaking to the media, Majithia also openly discussed the possibility of a future alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that any such decision would rest with the party’s senior leadership.
Expressing deep concern over the prevailing situation in Punjab, Majithia said that those who truly care for the state must set aside personal differences and unite on a common platform for the larger interests of Punjab. He stressed that saving Punjab’s water resources, agriculture and law and order requires a united Shiromani Akali Dal.
Referring to his initiative to reunite Akali factions, Majithia said the process has already been set in motion and has received a positive response from several leaders.
“My vehicle is already moving towards Barnala Sahib. I am continuously working for Punjab’s interests. When Punjab’s farming sector, employment and law and order are under threat, Akali unity becomes essential,” he said.
On being asked about a possible Akali Dal–BJP alliance, Majithia said such decisions are not announced on the streets.
Pointing to history, he recalled that the Akali Dal and BJP successfully ran governments together in 1997, 2007 and 2012. “Truth does not need proof. We have worked together in the past, but whether there will be an alliance in the future will be decided by the party’s senior leadership,” he said.
Launching a sharp attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, Majithia alleged that Punjab’s law and order situation has completely deteriorated.
Targeting the state’s police leadership, he said that a “temporary DGP is more concerned about saving his chair than ensuring public safety.”
“People are not safe even inside their homes. The administration’s focus is not on protecting citizens, but on safeguarding positions of power,” Majithia alleged, accusing the government of failing to maintain law and order in the state.
