Patiala, March 25, 2026: In a major breakthrough, the Patiala Police has arrested Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Sanaur, who had been absconding for several months.
Confirming the high-profile arrest, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Patiala stated that Pathanmajra was apprehended from the Shivpuri area of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. The arrest follows a coordinated operation by the Patiala Police after intelligence placed the fugitive legislator in the region.
Background of the Case
Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra had been a wanted man since September 2025, following the registration of an FIR at the Civil Lines Police Station, Patiala. The charges against him include:
The case was filed based on a complaint by a Zirakpur-based woman who alleged that the MLA misrepresented his marital status to enter into a relationship and subsequently married her in 2021 while already legally married.
The Fugitive Journey
Pathanmajra's journey on the run was marked by high drama. In September 2025, he managed to escape police custody in Karnal, Haryana, after an intense standoff involving gunfire. Following this, he was declared a Proclaimed Offender (PO) by an Amritsar court, and a Lookout Circular (LOC) was issued against him.
At one point, reports and video interviews suggested the MLA had fled to Australia to evade arrest, claiming that the cases against him were a "political conspiracy" by the AAP's Delhi leadership. His arrest in Madhya Pradesh today brings an end to a six-month manhunt that had caused significant embarrassment for the state administration.
Current Status
The Patiala Police is currently completing the legal formalities to bring Pathanmajra back to Punjab on a transit remand. He is expected to be produced before a local court in Patiala shortly.
This arrest comes amidst a wider crackdown by the Punjab government on internal misconduct, following the recent arrest of former minister Laljit Singh Bhullar in a separate case.
