New Delhi, August 12, 2026: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday questioned sections of the media over what he described as unequal treatment of the Opposition and BJP leaders, asking reporters why they interrupt him while not doing the same during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s briefings.
Gandhi made the remarks while responding to Shah’s comments on the ongoing debate in Parliament. The Congress leader accused the Home Minister of avoiding the House and not answering questions related to the government’s handling of the students’ issue.
During his interaction with reporters, a journalist attempted to ask Gandhi a question. Gandhi responded by turning the question back to the media.
“You asked me a question. Do you interrupt them?” he asked.
Gandhi then questioned why reporters frequently interrupt him and other Opposition leaders while, according to him, BJP leaders are not subjected to the same treatment.
He said students across the country are not afraid of the press and argued that journalists should also not hesitate to question those in power.
The Congress leader also raised questions over the alleged use of pellet guns by Delhi Police and demanded accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Gandhi asked whether Shah had authorised the use of pellet guns and said that if the Home Minister had given the order, he should resign. He added that even if Shah was unaware of the order, he should still step down, arguing that such a lack of knowledge would demonstrate incompetence.
“If he was unaware of the order, he must still resign because he is incompetent,” Gandhi said.
Gandhi’s interaction with the media thus centred not only on his criticism of the government but also on what he called a difference in the way journalists question the Opposition and those in power.
