Visually impaired from Ferozepur join Chandigarh protest over demands
1,754 backlog posts for visually impaired among key demands
Ferozepur, August 12, 2026: Visually impaired persons - Sukhchain Singh, Narayan Yadav, Karanveer and Sukhpal Singh - from Ferozepur joined a protest by unemployed visually impaired persons in Chandigarh on Wednesday, demanding the filling of backlog vacancies, resolution of education-related issues and an increase in financial assistance.
The protestors, who have been sitting on a dharna outside the office of the Department of Social Security, Women and Child Development in Chandigarh, since August 5, took out a protest march towards the Punjab Vidhan Sabha to press for the acceptance of their demands.
The march was led by President of the Unemployed Visually Impaired Struggle Front Nirmal Singh Bararwal and Vice-President Baljinder Singh Dhuri. Police stopped the protesters by putting up barricades on the route to the Vidhan Sabha, following which the demonstrators raised slogans and expressed resentment.
The major demands include filling 1,754 vacant backlog posts reserved for visually impaired persons at the earliest, resolving problems faced by visually impaired students regarding facilities, study material and assistive support, and increasing the financial assistance or pension provided to visually impaired persons.
The leaders said they would raise all these issues during the August 14 proposed meeting adding that if a concrete solution was not reached, the struggle would be intensified.
