A delegation of senior Congress leaders on Thursday met the Governor of Punjab and sought immediate, impartial and lawful action against Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema in connection with the alleged circumstances that led to the suicide of Gulzar Singh of Toor Banjara.
The Congress delegation urged the Governor to take serious cognisance of the matter and ensure that the allegations are investigated fairly, independently and strictly in accordance with law, without any political interference or pressure.
The delegation alleged that Gulzar Singh was forced to take the extreme step, and demanded that all aspects of the case, including the circumstances preceding his death and the allegations against those named in the matter, be thoroughly examined.
The Congress leaders maintained that the law must take its course and that no person, irrespective of political position or influence, should be above accountability.
The delegation comprised Charanjit Singh Channi, MP; Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, MP; Sher Singh Gubaya, MP; Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, MLA; and Barinder Pahra, MLA.
The Congress leaders told the Governor that the matter required urgent intervention to ensure justice for the deceased and his family. They also stressed the need for a transparent and credible investigation so that the truth could emerge and responsibility, if established, could be fixed under law.
The delegation's meeting with the Governor comes amid growing political confrontation over the allegations, with the Congress seeking to put pressure on the Punjab government for a time-bound and impartial probe.
