In what is being seen as a major political mobilisation ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to launch an ambitious 12-day Punjab Yatra from September 18, with the programme planned to cover the state through four separate routes before culminating in a mega gathering at Jalandhar.
According to Parampal Kaur Sidhu BJP State Media Co Convenor, the Yatra will be flagged off simultaneously from Fatehgarh Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, Fazilka and Lakhanpur near Pathankot, giving the BJP a four-cornered launch strategy aimed at reaching out to voters across Punjab.
The proposed mobilisation assumes significance as the BJP seeks to substantially expand its political footprint in the state and build momentum ahead of the Assembly polls. The four starting points are expected to provide the party with an opportunity to connect its campaign with different regions and constituencies of Punjab.
Amit Shah, Nitin Nabin to spearhead campaign
The Yatra is also expected to see the participation of senior BJP leadership, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President Nitin Nabin set to be among the party's star campaigners.
Their presence is likely to give the campaign a major national political thrust and underline the BJP's focus on Punjab at a crucial stage of its electoral preparations.
For the BJP, the 12-day exercise is expected to be more than a conventional political march. It is likely to serve as a major mass-contact and organisational mobilisation campaign, bringing party workers and senior leaders together while seeking to sharpen the party's electoral messaging.
Four routes, one political destination
The choice of Fatehgarh Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, Fazilka and Lakhanpur as launch points gives the Yatra a broad geographical spread. From the religious and historic significance of Fatehgarh Sahib and Talwandi Sabo to the strategic importance of Fazilka and the gateway region around Lakhanpur, the BJP's route plan appears designed to project a state-wide campaign.
The four Yatras will ultimately converge in Jalandhar, turning the culmination into a potential show of strength by the party. The Jalandhar finale is expected to be closely watched in political circles, particularly for the scale of mobilisation and the participation of the BJP's central leadership.
BJP eyes momentum ahead of Assembly battle
The Punjab Yatra comes at a time when political parties are increasingly shifting their focus towards strengthening their organisational machinery and voter outreach ahead of the Assembly elections.
With the BJP's national leadership expected to take a prominent role, the Yatra could become an important platform for the party to set the tone of its Punjab campaign, energise its cadre and project a stronger state-wide presence.
