Breaking: Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan claims responsibility for attack on Amritsar ASI, threatens further targeting of police

Amritsar (Punjab), September 13, 2026: A new twist has emerged in the reported attack involving Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jaswant Singh near Bhalla village in Amritsar, with Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH) claiming responsibility for the incident and allegedly threatening to target police personnel again.
The claim was made through a purported press statement attributed to TTH. There has been no immediate official response from the Amritsar Police to the statement.
According to reports, ASI Jaswant Singh was returning towards Ajnala on his motorcycle after completing his duty at the Amritsar Police Lines on September 11 when the incident took place near Bhalla village, under the jurisdiction of the Raja Sansi police station.
Jaswant Singh, who resides in Baba Deep Singh Colony on Fatehgarh Churian Road in Ajnala, reportedly told police that the incident occurred between around 7 pm and 7.30 pm. He said that shortly after passing a sugar mill near Bhalla village, he suddenly felt something strike his head and noticed bleeding.
He stopped his motorcycle but did not see anyone around, following which he rode to the Raja Sansi police station, according to his statement.
He later suspected that he had been shot from a distance.
Police subsequently registered a case at Raja Sansi police station and launched an investigation. Inspector Gurpreet said police were probing the incident.
However, questions have also emerged during the investigation. According to the information available, no CCTV footage has so far surfaced from the reported time and location of the incident.
The nature of the head injury and the claim of a gunshot have also not been officially established in the material provided, making the TTH claim of responsibility an allegation that remains to be independently verified.
Jaswant Singh was taken to a hospital in Amritsar for treatment and was earlier reported to be out of danger.
The alleged TTH statement has added a new security angle to the case by claiming responsibility for the incident and threatening further attacks against police and security personnel.
Police have so far not publicly confirmed the authenticity of the statement or attributed the incident to the outfit.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway.
