SAS Nagar (Punjab), October 19, 2026: Punjab shuttler Jagsher Singh Khangura was accorded a grand welcome at Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Mohali, after returning from Cairo, Egypt, where he won a bronze medal at the Junior World Badminton Championships.
The reception late Sunday night was led by Member of Parliament Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer and Punjab Badminton Association Secretary Ritin Khanna. Jagsher’s parents, relatives, fellow players, coaches, association office-bearers and sports enthusiasts were also present to congratulate the young shuttler.
Meet Hayer, a former president of the Punjab Badminton Association and a badminton player himself, said Jagsher was the first player from Punjab and the ninth Indian to win a medal at the Junior World Badminton Championships. He added that the bronze was the only medal won by the Indian badminton contingent at the championship in Egypt.
Congratulating the 17-year-old, Hayer said the achievement reflected his talent, dedication and potential at a young age.
“Punjab is steadily emerging as a hub for badminton. Dhruv Kapila, Tanvi Sharma and now Jagsher Singh Khangura represent the bright future of badminton in Punjab,” Hayer said.
He added that the sports-friendly environment under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann was producing encouraging results, with Punjab making its mark in badminton alongside its traditional strengths in hockey, athletics, shooting, archery and cricket.
Expressing happiness over the reception, Jagsher said the honour would motivate him to perform even better in upcoming competitions. He said he had won bronze in Egypt and would work harder to improve the colour of his medal in his next outing.
Punjab Badminton Association Secretary Ritin Khanna thanked Hayer for attending the reception, saying his presence had boosted the morale of badminton players.
Jagsher’s father, Manpreet Singh, mother, Rachhpal Kaur, and sister, Dr Sehaj Noor, were among those present to welcome the young medal winner.
