Chandigarh, October 23, 2026: Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Friday joined the family of Ajay Kumar of Abohar in a sit-in protest outside the Punjab Vidhan Sabha for the second consecutive day, demanding action in the murder case.
Ajay Kumar was shot outside a temple in Abohar last month and died during treatment on October 19. His family alleges that the police have failed to act against the actual culprits despite a statement he made before his death.
The family is also alleging the involvement of people linked to the widely reported 2015 Bhim murder case in Ajay Kumar’s killing. Ajay’s brother had testified in the Bhim murder case, leading to the conviction of the accused.
Addressing the protest, Jakhar demanded that the police register an FIR based on Ajay Kumar’s statement before his death.
“We are being forced to return here repeatedly to make this deaf government hear us. Yet neither the Chief Minister nor any minister in his government has the courage to listen to this family’s plea,” Jakhar said.
He alleged that the person accused by the family was close to Aam Aadmi Party leaders Manish Sisodia and Arvind Kejriwal. Jakhar further claimed that Kejriwal had blessed the individual on the day Ajay Kumar was murdered.
Accusing the AAP government of patronising criminal elements, Jakhar alleged that the party was bringing people with criminal backgrounds into politics as part of a strategy to win elections by any means.
He also questioned the alleged provision of police protection to a person serving a life sentence who is currently out on bail, claiming that it reflected the government’s double standards.
“One can easily imagine the plight of ordinary people in a city where the police are placed at a criminal’s disposal,” he said.
Jakhar further alleged that the person in question was involved in a bank fraud worth ₹220 crore in collusion with certain Punjab National Bank (PNB) officials. He claimed that police protection had been provided to prevent the bank from recovering its dues through the auction of the individual’s properties.
“The AAP’s affinity for gangsters and criminal elements is now out in the open,” Jakhar said, adding that he would accompany the family to the protest every day for as long as the Assembly session continued.
Meanwhile, Ajay Kumar’s mother and sister recounted the circumstances of the case to the media. They alleged that the person they hold responsible for the murder had posted a video threatening people while referring to his political patron, Sholi. They further alleged that the same individual had been appointed the AAP’s head in Abohar.
Ajay Kumar’s body remains at Abohar Civil Hospital, where members of the community are also continuing a sit-in protest demanding justice.
