IN MEMORIAM
Darshan Singh Khaira, in late eighties, passed away on Sunday, 25 August 2024, in Edmonton. He was born in Punjab, India. He is survived by his wife Georgia Khaira, son, daughter, and grandchildren.
What made Darshan special was that back in Punjab, in the sixties as a leader of the Punjab Students Union (PSU), he took part in the Naxalbari uprising—a socioeconomic inequality movement. After that in the early 1970’s he settled in Canada and retired as an Immigration Officer in 1997.
Here in Edmonton, since 1999, Darshan remained active in the socio-literary activities being organized by Maple Leaf Writers Foundation & Progressive Peoples Foundation of Edmonton. He often recited his poems and participated in day-to-day issues faced by our communities at large. He also authored some books.
On 31 August, Board-members of the Progressive Peoples Foundation of Edmonton, held a special meeting to cherish and honor the memories of a near and dear friend.
