Punjab Congress leaders hold talks with Canadian MP Amandeep Kaur Sodhi on trade, immigration issues

Brampton (Canada), August 25, 2026: A delegation of senior Punjab Congress leaders and members of the Indian-Canadian community held discussions with Canadian MP Amandeep Kaur Sodhi at her Brampton Centre constituency office, focusing on India-Canada relations, bilateral trade and immigration-related concerns.
The delegation was led by former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) General Secretary Pawan Dewan and former Chairman of the Planning Board, SBS Nagar, Satvir Singh Palijikki. Liberal Party of Canada National Vice-President Hardam Mangat, along with Amarpreet Aulakh, Yadwinder Sodhi and Ajeet Sodhi, were also part of the delegation.
The meeting covered a range of issues concerning India and Canada, with particular emphasis on strengthening bilateral economic ties and addressing concerns affecting the Indian community in Canada.
Dewan and Palijikki said detailed discussions were held on India-Canada relations, including ongoing negotiations between the two countries on a proposed Free Trade Agreement.
According to the delegation, MP Amandeep Kaur Sodhi said Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu were working with their Indian counterparts to finalise the terms of the proposed agreement under the leadership of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Immigration was another key issue discussed during the meeting, particularly concerns faced by Indian students and other members of the Indian community in Canada.
The delegation also raised issues concerning Indians living in Canada who continue to maintain family and property ties in India. Discussions included property-related matters in India and visa-related concerns for family members seeking to travel between the two countries.
Dewan and Palijikki described the meeting as constructive and said the discussions provided an opportunity to highlight issues affecting the Indian community as well as matters related to India-Canada economic and diplomatic ties.
