New Delhi, June 10, 2026: Is the Government planning to withdraw paper currency notes and replace them with plastic notes? The answer is No. The Government of India has categorically dismissed viral social media claims suggesting that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will replace all paper currency with plastic notes by June 30, 2026.
Responding to the rumours, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check clarified that neither the Government nor the RBI has any plan to withdraw existing paper currency notes or introduce a complete shift to plastic currency.
Several misleading posts circulating on social media had claimed that the RBI would phase out paper notes by the end of this month, triggering confusion and concern among the public. However, official sources confirmed that no such directive has been issued and the existing paper currency will continue to remain legal tender.
In a post on X, PIB Fact Check stated, "Several social media posts are falsely claiming that RBI will withdraw paper currency notes and replace them with plastic currency notes from June 30, 2026."
Rejecting the claim outright, the government fact-checking agency said, "This claim is Fake."
The PIB further clarified that, according to the RBI, there are no plans to withdraw paper currency notes or replace them with plastic currency notes by June 30, 2026.
Authorities have urged citizens not to believe or forward unverified financial information, warning that such misinformation can create unnecessary panic among traders, businesses, and the general public.
The Government has advised people to rely only on official sources for information related to currency and banking matters. It also urged citizens to verify claims before sharing them on social media or messaging platforms.
The PIB reiterated that authentic information regarding currency and banking policies should be obtained only through official RBI communications and not through viral social media posts.
