Cannes (France), May 20, 2025: Veteran Indian actor Sharmila Tagore graced the red carpet at the 78th Cannes Film Festival alongside acclaimed American filmmaker Wes Anderson to represent Aranyer Din Ratri, a classic film directed by the legendary Satyajit Ray.
The film was featured in the prestigious Cannes Classics section after undergoing a meticulous six-year restoration project led by Anderson. Tagore, a long-time icon of Indian cinema, shares a rich history with the festival. Her performance in Ray’s Devi was part of the official selection at Cannes in 1962, and she served as a jury member in 2009.
Her return in 2025 marks yet another milestone in her enduring relationship with the international festival circuit.
Aranyer Din Ratri, which also starred Simi Garewal, was originally released in 1970 and remains one of Ray's most celebrated works. Its restoration highlights the ongoing global appreciation for Ray’s cinematic legacy and Tagore’s contribution.
