BJP Punjab slams state govt over monsoon mining ban lapses; calls for immediate action

Chandigarh, July 3, 2025: As heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh triggers rising river levels and flood warnings across northern India, the Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the state government of failing to enforce the seasonal ban on mining activities in riverbeds during the monsoon.
BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal launched a scathing attack on the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government, alleging that sand and gravel mining is continuing in several districts despite the annual July 1 to September 30 mining ban, which is imposed to prevent erosion, protect riverbanks, and safeguard human lives during flood season.
“This is not just negligence — it’s dangerous,” said Baliawal. “At a time when flood risk is rising and downstream areas of Punjab are vulnerable, the government has not only failed to halt illegal mining but also neglected to strengthen embankments and protective bunds in at-risk zones.”
He raised questions about the administration’s intent, alleging that the lack of enforcement could either be due to influence from the sand mafia or a display of administrative arrogance.
The BJP has demanded an immediate stop to all illegal mining, urgent repairs of embankments, and accountability from departments overseeing disaster management, mining, and water resources.
In response, AAP sources within the government said that the state is closely monitoring the situation and action will be taken against any illegal mining activities. An official statement on flood preparedness and mining ban enforcement is expected soon.
Meanwhile, residents in low-lying areas remain on high alert as water levels in rivers like the Beas and Sutlej continue to rise. The administration has advised vigilance and issued advisories in flood-prone districts.
