Babushahi Bureau
Alberta (Canada), October 18, 2026: A major fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta has left an unspecified number of people dead and injured, Canadian officials confirmed.
Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty said fatalities and injuries had been reported following an incident at the military base on Saturday. He did not disclose the number of casualties or the cause of the incident, describing the situation as “very, very active and delicate”.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as serious and said the federal government was working closely with the Alberta government and local authorities to coordinate the response.
The fire spread beyond the base’s perimeter fence into the surrounding area, with strong winds making firefighting efforts more challenging. Emergency crews from multiple jurisdictions responded to the blaze.
Hospitals in Edmonton, located about 180 kilometres northwest of the base, received injured people from the affected area and faced pressure from the influx of patients, according to Canadian media reports.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Canadian Armed Forces are investigating the incident. Authorities have not yet released details about what triggered the fire.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the fire as significant and tragic, saying it had affected military personnel. Officials have been coordinating emergency response efforts, while the nearby community of Wainwright has also provided support.
CFB Wainwright is one of Canada’s major military training facilities and houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre.
Authorities have not released a confirmed casualty count or further details about the circumstances of the incident.
