Mohali (Punjab), August 2, 2026: The husband of a former sarpanch was seriously injured after a retired Army man allegedly opened fire at him with a licensed rifle in Seelba village near Kharar in Mohali district on Saturday night.
The victim, identified as Rajmir, sustained multiple gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. His condition is reported to be critical.
Police identified the accused as Maninderpal Singh, a retired Army personnel who is currently working as a security guard in Chandigarh.
According to the police, Maninderpal had returned to his native village on leave on Saturday night. An argument allegedly broke out between him and Rajmir in the local market over an unspecified issue.
Police said the accused later went home and allegedly returned with his licensed 12-bore rifle. He allegedly opened fire at Rajmir, who was sitting outside a shoe shop.
Rajmir was reportedly hit in the abdomen and hand. The firing triggered panic in the market, following which local residents rushed the injured man to hospital.
After the incident, the accused allegedly locked himself inside his house. A crowd gathered outside the residence before police personnel reached the spot and took him into custody after gaining entry to the house.
The police have seized the licensed rifle and launched a further investigation into the incident. The exact circumstances that led to the alleged firing are being examined.
