Chandigarh, June 13, 2026: Three separate canal breaches reported across Punjab have caused significant damage to agricultural land, leaving farmers worried about crop losses and raising concerns over the maintenance of irrigation infrastructure.
In Bhikhi area of Mansa district, a canal breach created a major gap in the embankment, inundating nearly 50 acres of farmland. Similarly, in Lehra Mohabbat, Bathinda, a canal reportedly developed a breach of around 50 feet, allowing water to gush into nearby fields and damage standing crops.
Another incident was reported from Rameana village in Faridkot district, where a canal breach led to waterlogging in agricultural fields, causing extensive crop losses for local farmers.
The incidents have sparked anger among farmers in the affected districts. They alleged that inadequate canal maintenance, delayed repairs, and poor desilting work by authorities contributed to the breaches. Farmers claimed that recurring negligence by the administration has resulted in substantial agricultural losses year after year.
Demanding immediate action, affected farmers urged the government to repair vulnerable canal sections before the arrival of the monsoon season and provide adequate compensation to those who have suffered crop damage.
