Clash erupts between transgender groups over wedding ‘Badhai’
Ferozepur, October 30, 2025: A violent confrontation broke out between two transgender (kinnar) groups in the Heera Mandi area of Ferozepur city on Wednesday night over the right to collect traditional 'badhai' (congratulatory gifts) from a wedding household. The entire incident was captured on CCTV, showing members of one group attacking the other with sticks and sharp weapons.
Transgender communities in Punjab often rely on 'badhai' – performing rituals, dances, and blessings at weddings and childbirths – as a primary source of income. They also collect contributions during festivals and operate within informally divided territories. Clashes over such rights are not uncommon, though rarely escalate to violence captured on camera.
The clash began when a transgender group arrived at the wedding venue to perform blessings and collect monetary gifts – a customary practice known as 'badhai'. However, a rival group soon reached the spot, claiming territorial rights over the area, leading to a fierce street brawl. Several individuals from both sides sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at Ferozepur Civil Hospital.
Both groups have lodged complaints against each other at the local police station, demanding strict legal action.
